Two big changes that have happened to bathroom design over the recent years.  We have raised the heights of the cabinetry to be the same as our kitchens and changed to vessel sinks that sit on top of the counters.  What most of our clients that think they want both elements don’t realize is, that unless you are over 6 ft. tall, you really should not put both the higher cabinets and the higher sink together!  They also don’t realize that they need to use a very specific type of faucet for a vessel as well.

My advice: Use a vessel sink in a powder room.  Use taller cabinetry with an undermount sink in a high use bathroom.

This is a powder room and a master bath in the same house.

Many people think that if they are just replacing everything without changing the layout, it should be easy to do without experienced help.

As a certified kitchen designer, I have seen many mistakes made by home owners who thought that the ‘do it yourself’ approach would save them money with their kitchen remodel. These home owners either simply replaced their old appliances with new ones, or they followed the ‘plan’ given to them by the big box store.

One homeowner just replaced a dishwasher that was next to a corner with a new model that had a larger handle. Now, they can’t open a drawer because that handle is in the way. We are helping this homeowner make changes to their kitchen so they can use their new appliance.

I know of someone who did nothing more than put new flooring in their kitchen and when they tried to move the refrigerator back in place, it no longer fit. It’s these little details that at first, may seem to be of little impact on the new kitchen- but in reality, it’s the details that can make a huge difference.

Over the years I have even helped homeowners avoid firetraps with their kitchen remodel by reviewing the plans they have received from other people. To an untrained eye, a design on paper may look great.
